At All Kids Dental, we’re here to help your child head into the classroom with more than just sharpened pencils and packed lunches — we want them walking in with a bright, confident, healthy smile.

Here’s your Back-to-School Dental Checklist to make sure their oral health gets an A+ this year.

1. Book That Back-to-School Checkup

Before their schedule fills with homework, sports, and after-school activities, schedule a dental exam. These visits help:

  • Catch little problems before they become big ones
  • Keep their smile clean and cavity-free
  • Monitor growth and development, especially during those big jaw and tooth transition years

Bonus: It’s one less absence during the school year!

2. Time for a Fresh Toothbrush

Start the school year with a toothbrush that’s ready to go the distance. Replace it if:

  • It’s more than 3 months old
  • The bristles look frayed
  • They’ve been sick recently
Tip: Let your child pick one with their favorite color or character — they’re more likely to use it!

3. Smile-Safe Snacks for School Lunches

What your child eats at school matters for their teeth. Great options include:

  • Apple slices
  • Cheese sticks
  • Whole grain crackers
  • Yogurt (without too much added sugar)
Avoid sticky fruit snacks, candy, or anything that lingers on teeth — these can lead to decay over time.

4. Lock In a Brushing Routine (Even on Busy Mornings)

Mornings can be chaotic, but don’t skip the basics:

  • Brush for 2 minutes, twice a day
  • Floss once a day
  • For kids under 8, supervision is still important

Want to make brushing fun? Use a 2-minute song or brushing app!

5. If They’re in Braces, Prep a “Braces Kit” for Their Backpack

For kids with braces, school days require a little extra care. Pack a small pouch with:

  • A travel toothbrush
  • Floss or floss threaders
  • Orthodontic wax
  • Extra rubber bands (if needed)

And don’t forget a reminder about foods to avoid — no popcorn, gum, or sticky candy!

6. Playing Sports? Protect Their Smile

One elbow to the mouth during PE or practice can do some serious damage. If your child is in sports, ask us about a custom sports mouthguard. It fits better, protects better, and is much more comfortable than store-bought options.

7. Think Beyond the Teeth: Breathing, Sleep & Development

School success isn’t just about study habits — it’s also about healthy breathing and quality sleep. If your child:

  • Breathes through their mouth
  • Snores at night
  • Has trouble focusing in class
…bring it up during their visit. These could be signs of bigger airway or developmental issues we can help identify early.
